Background Information

external image james-buchanan.jpgJames Buchanan (April 23, 1791-June 1, 1868) was the 15th president of the united states. Buchanan was born in mercersburg Pennsylvania. He was the middle child of eleven, he had six sisters and four brothers. Early on, he attended a local academy and then went on to dickinson college.

Political Information

James buchanan served as president between 1857 and 1861. He originally registered as a Federalist but as the Federalists became unpopular he joined the Democrats. prior to his presidential election, he had 40 years service in congress. He served in both houses in congress for Pennsylvania. Buchanan also served as the secretary of state under James K. Polk. After turning down a seat on the supreme court, he became the minister to the united kingdom under franklin pierce. Running in the 1857 election, Buchanan Ran as a democrat. He was looked upon as a compromise between the north and the south because although he was a northerner he was sympathetic to the south.

Domestic Issues

During his augural speech, Buchanan stated that he would not be running for re-election. He believed that if he was concerned with the publics opinion of him, then he would not make the best decision for the country as a whole. Two days after he was sworn into office, the decision of the Dred Scott case was released, reversing the former 42-40 compromise saying that it was unconstitutional to ban slaves in new states. buchanan urged the northerners to obey the new law but many were outraged that slaves would be allowed in new states.

Foreign Issues

President Buchanan was majorly unsuccessful his foreign agenda. James Buchanan called on America for another war with Mexico because people on the borders were being killed, however Americans did not want another war because they were too preoccupied with their own civil problems dealing with slavery. President Buchanan also tried to annex Cuba but republican opposition was too strong.
